The Historic Glove Collection:
Two pairs of leather gloves. Circa 1600-1625.
[Accession numbers 23341 and 23345]
It is evident that certain motifs were popular as they appear again
and again in early seventeenth century gloves. The carnation or
gillyflower, tulip, rose, strawberry, pelican, and whale or dolphin
are often seen. Many of the embroidery motifs were taken from contemporary
books illustrated with woodcuts, especially Bestiaries and Herbals
which dealt with animals and flowers. There are two pairs of gloves
in the Historic Glove Collection belonging to the Worshipful Company
of Glovers of London which are embroidered with the story of Jonah
and the Whale.
