The Royal Glove Collection:
Duplicate glove, made for Queen Victoria's coronation, 28 June 1838 and
the original coronation glove worn by Queen Elizabeth II, 2 June 1953.
[Accession numbers 25744 and 25749]
Elbow-length glove made for Queen Victoria of white kid, lined with
crimson satin; gauntlet of applied gold lace with tassel. The back
of the hand is embroidered with the arms of Bernard Edward Fitzalan,
l2th.Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal and Hereditary Marshal of England.
It is not certain whether this replica was made at the time of Queen
Victoria's coronation in 1838 or at a later date.
The present Queen's coronation glove was made for Harborow's by Dent's of Worcester and was embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework. The leather (Spanish lamb skin) was supplied by C W Pittard of Yeovil. This is the original glove used by Her Majesty at her Coronation in 1953, not a duplicate. The glove is very similar to those made for her father and grandfather but it is interesting to note that the embroidery now incorporates the Welsh daffodil in addition to the English, Scottish
and Irish national symbols.
