Charles I gloves. Circa 1625-40
The General Collection:
Charles I gloves. Circa 1625-40

This pair of gloves was acquired by the Worshipful Company of Glovers of London in 1988. The gloves were originally in the possession of the Milward family of Uttoxeter in Derbyshire. Tradition held that these (and another pair of gloves) were left at their house, Eaton Dovedale, by King Charles I while on a visit to Sir Thomas Milward. Although there is no firm evidence to support this claim the style and decoration of the gloves are correct for the period.
Leather gauntlet gloves, the glove and gauntlet cut in one, with an angled side vent and dark pink silk side ribbons to form a gusset. Embroidered with fine silver gilt wire thread in an abstract design and trimmed with silver gilt bobbin lace and spangles.
